D’banj Clears of Rape, Fraud Allegations

The AfroPop music star, D’banj has survived the troubled waters as report has it that the Koko Master born Dapo Oyebanjo has been cleared of rape and fraud allegations by the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The police and the anti-graft agency gave ‘Banga Lee’ as he’s also fondly called a clean slate in separate clearance reports upon completion of investigations with incontrovertible outcomes on the innocence of D’banj. If you may recall, in 2020, the singer was accused of rape and the Inspector General of Police ordered an investigation into the allegation. In a report dated November 14, 2023, with case number CR:3000/X/FHQ/ABJ/SEB/T.1/VOL 18/284, and signed by ACP YY Abubakar of the Special Enquiry Bureau at the Force Criminal Investigations Department at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the police said the matter was investigated but there was no evidence to substantiate the claim. “The allegation was investigated,” the report partly read. “The complainant, witnesses and suspects made their statements. The investigation was expanded across board but there was no prima-facie evidence, adduced facts or corroborative evidence to establish the offence of rape and sexual assault against the singer.” Also, sometime in late 2022, D’banj was wrongly accused of diversion of funds associated with the N-Power Programme of the Federal Government. However, in a separate outcome after its investigation, the ICPC said that D’banj was not guilty of any fraud allegation. 197 Views

Copyright Mess: Ed Sheeran Wins In Court

A Manhattan jury found Ed Sheeran’s hit “Thinking Out Loud” did not infringe on the copyright of the classic Marvin Gaye song “Let’s Get It On.” The jury determined that Sheeran did not wrongfully copy compositional elements or melodies from the song. The plaintiffs had alleged similarities between the chord progression, harmonic rhythm, and certain melodies in the two songs. Sheeran’s legal team had argued that the melodies are different and the elements used in both songs are common in pop music. ( Source: CNN) 492 Views

2023 Governorship Election: Lessons Learnt, I Have No Regret- Funke Akindele Speaks

The Lagos State governorship election has come and gone with the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared winner.  Unfortunately, PDP the supposed strong opposition party came third having pulled 62,442 votes.  While it’s been bandied about on social media that the star actress, Funke Akindele, who ran as deputy governor has deleted all the political materials on her Instagram page, Jennifer as she’s fondly called has responded. The message posted on her Twitter page reads “It has been an amazing and insightful experience on my journey to the ballot and I must say, it was an absolute learning curve for me. A lot of things have been learned and unlearned. I sincerely do not regret taking this huge step of running for office. I therefore want to thank the people of Lagos state for believing in me and supporting my decision to run for office. I saw every message of support online and offline, I heard of all the places where people supported me and challenged those who tried to discredit me. I remember every warm welcome during our campaign tour and the faith you all showed in me. The elections might not have panned out in the way we hoped, but it was an honourable run for us. We fought a good fight indeed as a matter of fact. I also want to encourage all who mean well for the Nation and the state of Lagos not to give up. I understand that some of us are beginning to develop some sort of apathy towards the system, however, if we do not speak, we would never be heard. I’m glad that we could at least speak up. Thank you once again Lagos, for showing your daughter support. As I consider my next moves in life, I will continue prioritizing the good of the people and the integrity of my position as an advocate for the people. Eko oni baje! 265 Views

My Playlist Kings, Queens: TOP NIGERIAN ARTISTES OF 2018

Yes, I’m unrepentant music critic with ears for good music (ask my close buddies 😜), and as an entertainment writer of many years, I can proudly say that I have seen it all in the Nigerian music scene and I have actually written a couple of Nigerian biggest artistes to fame (ask google 😂😂). Irrespective of language, I listen to all genre of music so far it’s good, and It’s no longer news that I’m a great lover of ‘oldskull’ classics. I may not have a favourite NIGERIAN artiste but I have a couple of good and bad artistes who blazed my playlist throughout the year 2018 ( though the year never end 😜). There are some with good songs and some have actually won my heart with their nonsenses that make sense. In no particular order, here my playlist kings and queens of 2018.                OLAMIDE: Call him, king of the street vibes, you may not be wrong. I’m not a great fan of Baddo, but my day is incomplete without listen to his few good songs and some nonsenses that make sense. He has many but ‘KPAKUJEMU’ is the most played for now. FALZ THE BAD GUY: This is another good NIGERIAN artiste I hate to love. I’m also not a huge fan of FALZ but I cannot explain how a couple of his songs dominate my playlist. He’s obviously one of the very few NIGERIAN artistes whose lyrics make meanings to me. He always have good songs but ‘WAY’ is on repeat. KIZZ DANIEL: I like this guy’s songs though I’m still not a fan. He’s a good artiste with amazing vocal delivery. His couple of hit songs always got me waiting for the next single. 4DAYS is rocking my playlist at the moment. SIMI: For now, she is one of the top 5 Nigerian female vocalists. 2 or 3 years ago, my friend Tony Doe Onwuchekwa actually introduced her couple of unreleased singles to me, and without any doubt, I knew SIMI is a star in waiting. And today She didn’t disappoint me as her voice and good songs have catapulted her to the top rung of a proverbial ladder reserved for the best. Sorry, I’m confused to pick one of her many good songs rocking my playlist. TEKNO: He got the rhythm and his delivery is enticing. I like him a lot but oh, damn!, I’m not his fan 🤷🏼‍♂️. TEKNO might not be a fantastic singer, he’s in the class of his own. Without an album (CD) to his credit, this great guy has many hit singles that can make an album go platinum. Though many of his songs are on repeat, ‘GET IT’, his latest collabo got me dancing. ADEKUNLE GOLD: ‘SADE’ was the song that got this gifted singer on my radar. And Adekunle won my heart with his follow-up singles. His debut and sophomore albums (CDs) have made me a great fan of his good music. He dominates my playlist. BRYMO: Here is one of the Nigerian top 5 best singers. Brymo got my love for his unrelenting determination to stay relevant despite the nonsenses in vogue. This dude is his own best competition. Brymo does good music and he’s one of my playlist Kings. BURNA BOY: I’m obviously not his fan but got attached by couple of his old songs( Yawa, Check and balance). BURNA is doing well at the moment and some of his new songs have made me fall in love with his unique style of delivery. Ye! BURNA is currently blazing my playlist, o ‘Gbona’ DANNY S: I don’t know this guy exist until I stumbled on ‘EGE’ this year. His nonsenses ease my tension in Lagos traffic. He obviously can’t sing, Danny S weaves ‘street jargons’ into good rhythm. ‘Oh my God’ and ‘Salary’ got him on the list of my most played songs of 2018. ARAMIDE: she is a good singer with amazing vocal range. I discovered her through a couple of her good songs and I became a fan instantly ( no time to check time 😁). I like most of the songs in her ‘Briefcase’ but catches me with ‘Magic’. What a queen on my playlist. SMALL DOCTOR: I cannot pay to watch him performing live on stage, but will always have a couple of his nonsenses on replay. I never liked the Small Doctor until ‘Penalty’ shot him to the limelight. And ‘REMEMBER’ has made him my 2018 playlist favourite. DAVIDO: He’s obviously one of the Nigerian biggest exports at the moment. Not a fantastic singer but O.B.O’s weaknesses have become his strength and the reason he’s one of the most listen to NIGERIAN artistes. I’m not his fan but I love some of his songs that have gotten permanent places on my playlist. QDOT ALAGBE: I’m a fan of this guy ( I know, some of my friends will be wondering why 😁😁). Probably because I can relate to his rhythm and rhymes. I like the way he delivers his messages, which he weaves in Yoruba parlance. I also like the progression in his music style. With many of his songs on my playlist, ‘GBESE’ is on replayOREZI: Yeah! He’s my guy from way back and I’m not surprised by Orezi’s continuous rise and rise to fame in the Nigerian music scene. He does good music and he’s an highly gifted singer who knows his onions in the competitive music industry. I have lots of his good old and new songs on my playlist, but ‘Whine for Daddy’ is always on repeat . TO BE CONTINUED— (Written By Omogbolahan Akinwumi) 208 Views
